If you’re looking for a cheaper clean, the obvious move is to hire an individual rather than go through an agency. It’s a fair question, and worth answering honestly: sometimes it is cheaper. But the gap is usually smaller than people expect, and what sits inside that gap matters more than the hourly rate.
Depending on the agency and the individual, the difference tends to come out at a few pounds an hour. Once you’ve worked out what that actually saves you over a month, the question becomes a different one: is that saving worth the time you’d spend if something goes wrong?
Cleaning looks simple from the outside. In practice, the jobs that go wrong nearly always go wrong for the same reasons – the wrong product on the wrong surface, or nobody being clear on what was supposed to be cleaned.
Using the wrong chemical on stone, wood, granite or a delicate fabric causes damage that costs far more to put right than any saving on an hourly rate. And a cleaner who hasn’t been briefed properly on a property will clean what looks obvious rather than what you actually wanted done, which leaves everybody frustrated.
An agency’s job is to remove both of those risks before the cleaner ever arrives. We check the records and the skills of everyone we take on, assess how they work, and train them where they need it. Nobody is sent to a customer on their own until we’re confident they’re ready. If a cleaner isn’t the right fit for your home, we replace them.
None of those are things an individual cleaner can realistically offer, and most people only discover they wanted them at the point they need one.
If you’ve found someone reliable you trust, and you’re comfortable carrying the risk yourself, an individual cleaner can work well. If you’d rather that risk sat with somebody else – and you want the clean to still happen in August – an agency is what you’re paying for. The hourly rate is only part of the price.
